IMPROPER SPACE PLANNING & INFLEXIBLE FURNISHING

WHAT IMPROPER SPACE PLANNING AND INFLEXIBLE FURNISHING CAN DO TO YOU FAMILY

Think of the moment when you are back from work and you find your home neat and clean with only your loved ones welcoming you home. You be a home maker or a working woman or a man, clean home always raises our happiness quotient. Now imagine this space again where not just the home is clean but also have enough free or open space to breathe, play, connect and LIVE. How would it make you feel now?
Before I started this company, I used to live in Mumbai with my family. I wanted to buy a 3BHK for my family, but the soaring flat prices was a big turn off for us and hence we decided to settle with a 2BHK. While our space shrunk our demands and needs didn’t. It was a challenge for us to make our flat clutter free and more spacious.
With new flat comes new purchases, even if I would have tried to minimise my purchases, the furniture and other items of utilities made the flat look too cluttered and clumsy. What caught my attention more was the inflexible furniture options which occupied maximum living space of our house. I was not at all happy. They were not just bulky but absolutely unadaptable to our changing needs.
However, with every problem comes a solution and this is how Spacemax was conceptualised in my mind. It was my desire to create smart, flexible and durable furniture which accommodates not just growing family but is more dynamic, usable and trendy.
While I was coping to adjust myself in that small flat I observed some behavioural changes in my family as well. It is a known fact that the lesser free space affects us subconsciously too. Whenever I used to be back to a congested house my stress level rose and made me feel dissatisfied with what I have in life. It created negativity and frustration in all of us especially my wife. Frequent mood swings, distractions, agitation and restlessness are some of the common traits which are associated with having a cluttered or over furnished house. Moreover, things which once brought with so much love and affection, lost its charm and made me feel distant and guilty every time I saw it being quietly adjusted in some corner.
Even my kids got affected with the furnishing of the house, they felt embarrassed and hence had difficulty in making friends. They became less active, social and cheerful.
Imagine all that hard-earned money spent on making kids happy was otherwise affecting them. It also promotes bad planning and bad spending habits.
Recent trends

While I was still working on my dream to make houses more flexible in terms of furniture requirements and usage, I noticed a surging trend in real estate market these days.

In order to provide affordable housing to people, builders are shrinking carpet area to bear the market pressure. Studio apartment is one such concept which erases boundaries within the house, thereby using lesser space. However, smaller space puts more pressure on households to de clutter their houses. After all every house needs some breathing space to make it more liveable.
Lot of innovations have been brought up in this furnishing space. At Spacemax we have done projects to make spaces more usable.
Here are some key ways that can help us make our home more spacious
1. Install smart furniture: every piece of furniture that you buy should serve some purpose either functional or aesthetic and hence you don’t just need furniture but smart furniture. It should be flexible, light, comprehensive and movable. It should add value to the functionality of the space.
2. Mountable or floating: with the change in family dynamics the requirement of the house also changes, a couple will have a different requirement than a family with toddlers, teens or adult kids, so the furniture should be such that it can be customised as per the changed requirement of the house over the years and should not sit fixed on the living area.
3. Balanced: There should be a fine balance between the aesthetic and functional aspect of furniture, any sort of disbalance takes away the beauty of the place and makes it look clumsy and worthless. Time should be invested in proper planning of interiors of the house, considering family requirements and modern trends.
4. Bring happiness: This is the most important aspect for everything you bring home and live with. Good quality, value for money and durability should be the key trait of your furnishing.
So, go on and plan now for a big change in your home/office furnishing and make the place breathe and exude warmth and happiness for you.

COLOUR AND SPACE

ROLE OF COLOUR IN A SPACE

Color can make or break a space. Choosing appropriate colors for a facility’s spaces is an important aspect of an interior design, good to know a few basics about color. Color is sometimes divided into two categories: warm and cool tones. Warm tones, like red, orange and yellow can energize a space and its occupants. Cool tones such as blue, green and purple generally create quiet, relaxing atmospheres. When choosing wall and flooring colors, important to keep the goal of the space in mind. If energetic work is being performed in a space, warm, exhilarating tones might be good to consider, for example. In break areas, cool tones may be more appropriate when occupants can relax. Color has a profound influence on a space and the people in it. Use it to your advantage to create an inviting, productive space. Sharing a few pictures from our project.

EVOLUTION OF INTERIOR DESIGN

Minimalism has long been the mantra for those who yearn for simple, basic spaces with clean lines, pared-down forms and no-frills design. Minimalism isn’t just a design style, ‘Less is more’ is a way of life that celebrates a simple, clutter-free existence. This can sometimes be at odds with traditional Indian design, where ornamentation and opulence are the norm. As a consequence, minimalist spaces are often perceived as cold, sterile and unwelcoming. However, it’s possible to fuse both of these aesthetics. With some tweaks and creative thinking, you can have a home that’s the perfect blend of modern minimalism and Indian sensibilities.

FUNCTIONALITY OF INNOVATIVE DESIGN

EVERY INNOVATIVE DESIGN IS NOT FUNCTIONAL

Recently while I was browsing through Better Interiors magazine, I came across this innovative coffee table design from BoConcepts. My first reaction was of ‘wow’ what an innovative idea to have a multifunctional coffee table which has three openable sections on top itself so one can store little tit bits, magazines etc. Then I looked at it more closely and started to imagine if this coffee table is sitting in my living room, how functional it really will be for me. Suddenly I realized that I am inviting inconvenience if I have this piece of ‘functional’ furniture around me. For most part there is no centre where I can keep a decorative vase or a mug of coffee without getting into the trouble of moving things here and there, to locate a remote from inside one of the openable section. ‘Functional’ really means that with least inconvenience we should be able to access the storage and use full features of a furniture, not in this case.

So when a Client requested me to design a unique multifunctional coffee table for his living room, I at least knew what ‘not to do’ to be unique and innovative. I designed a coffee table keeping the top fixed because I knew you don’t want to give the trouble of moving things here and there, which most of the time would be the case in any functional household. This coffee table has a drawer each on three sides, open spaces of varying sizes on each side to keep remotes, newspapers, magazines and coffee table books. It even has hidden casters below for easy mobility. Made from teak veneer in walnut color and PU finish. Cost one third. It has become quite a centre of attraction in my Client’s living room.

MADE TO ORDER FURNITURE

Why made-to-order?

When quality, uniqueness, and precision matter.

We design and build furniture and interiors that you need, and not what ‘we think’ you need

There are hundreds of furniture shops in my city, I can buy what I want without waiting!

Is this true? How many times you get that picture perfect piece of furniture that you wanted? Doesn’t it happen that you spent lot of time and energy hopping from one shop to another but never finds an exact match, or even if you find one close to what you are looking for, the price tag is prohibitive? Ok, even if all this did not happen and you were lucky to get something of your choice and you happily purchased it. Now you need another piece of furniture and you repeat the same cycle. Guess what your house becomes a museum fine collection of furniture that doesn’t go together, has different styles, material, colors, patterns and so on.

Furniture collected from different shops at different times can never reflect your individuality.

If you need your surroundings to be in harmony with you, you need furniture and interiors that reflect your unique personality, add to your comfort and uplift your mood. They must be functional for you and ‘in-alignment’ with your lifestyle.

The mass produced furniture can never be exclusive as they are made to be ‘one-size-fits-all’. Agree you can get some exotic materials and fine finishes, but can never get them to fit your space with precision.

CONTEMPORARY STYLE DECORE

At its core, the word ‘contemporary’ means ‘of the moment,’ which makes this style particularly hard to define. Dating back to the 1970s, this style is unique because it borrows elements from many other aesthetics. In it, you can see nods to modern, traditional, art deco and even futuristic design.

The other defining point of contemporary design is that it’s constantly evolving. Unlike other styles which are more or less set in stone, what’s ‘of the moment’ today may change in a few years’ time. Today, the look is defined by curved lines, neutral colors and minimalism, but it may look slightly different in the future.

Interior Designing is not a new profession. Although some may claim that it only came into existence about a century ago, Interior Designing has always been prevalent. Furnishings have required to be adorned in upholstery fabric since the day people understood what furnishing was.

Interior Design does not only involve furnishing fabrics, or an understanding of fine furnishings , it also involves having an awareness of spaces, colour and sustainability. Proper space planning is essential. Interior design is all about how we experiment with spaces. It’s a powerful, essential part of our daily lives and affects how we live, work, play, and even heal. Comfortable homes, functional workplaces, beautiful public spaces-that’s interior design at work. It enhances the look of the furnishings, and improves the appeal of the colour and designs of the fabrics as well.

The evolution of Interior Design has been interesting. In the early 20th century, the designs were predominantly Victorian style, and were characterized by rooms decorated with heavy drapery, Victorians, overstuffed furniture and dark colors. This is the time when the profession of Interior Design had started to gain recognition, and had started to get accepted worldwide.

In an era where interior design has become a medium to express oneself via home furnishings its very important to accessorise space properly to increase the asthetics of the place.
